To give is to receive, so why not give compliments?

A compliment is pleasure to the soul as well as a euphoric, symphonic pleasure to the mind. Better yet, it’s a pleasure that is shared equally by both the giver and the recipient. The smile of the recipient cast upon the giver can provide rejuvenating energy for both persons.

For many, a well-timed compliment can lead to doors of opportunity opening in the most unexpected places.  Of course, you cannot give expecting a return for that negates the very purpose.  To give with an intended outcome is not giving at all and actually is a negative sum game.  Read Happiness & Joy.

I am trying to make a concerted effort to give a minimum of five compliments a day.  In our harried life, it is more difficult than we think.  When I continue this effort over the course of multiple days, I find the pleasure increases.  Constant repetition makes it easier to give honest, sincere compliments directly detailing the positive trait of that individual.

As Dale Carnegie says, “A compliment must be sincere honest praise.”  Please read his section on praise in his book How To Win Friends and Influence People; it is one of the most profound analyses of human behavior.  How do you feel when you receive a shallow, non-sincere compliment?  How do you feel receiving a detailed compliment which is personal to you?  The point is made.

Five compliments a day – try it.  What’s the worst that can happen? You make someone smile and feel good about themselves?  The best is that you both enjoy the shared energy, it radiates to others, and it ultimately comes back to you when you need it the most.

  1. I like it! Especially with the number five in it. This makes you think more about giving compliments and makes it a goal for the day.
I will try this, starting tomorrow!

    Awesome post
